Submit a sample

Soil and root samples are examined microscopically to quantify soil microbes.

The best results are obtained from fresh samples that are processed within 3-5 days of sampling.

Please ensure that you open an account and book a sample submission before sending in a sample.

Samples must be analysed as quickly as possible as soil microbiology changes after a sample is taken. As such, priority is given to samples coming into the lab with an aim to complete the analysis within three days of receiving the sample. To ensure efficiency we request that you please book a sample submission in advance. Please complete the form under the product description when purchasing an analysis in the shop, the form helps us schedule and track samples for quick turnaround times and better service.

Soil food web analysis

A 10g soil sample is required to perform the analysis.
Guidelines for sampling:

  • Samples should be drawn from the root zone of the plant of interest. Take a sample at the base of a plant.
  • Brush away plant debris to expose the soil surface.
  • Take three samples around the base of the plant with a small shovel or sample core.
  • It is best to sample the top 10 – 15cm of the soil.
  • Mix the samples together in a plastic bag, ensure that the bag is only half full leaving some space for air.
  • Seal the bag and label with the sample reference number, customer name and date.
  • Samples should be stored in the shade and not exposed to excessive heat.
  • Samples should be shipped as soon as possible. The best results are gained within 3-5 days of sampling.

Mycorrhizal colonisation

A 5g root sample (small handful of roots) is required to perform the analysis.

Guidelines for sampling:

  • The best results are gained from young fibrous roots.
  • Gently dig up the plant of interest.
  • Cut the plant top off just above the roots.
  • Place roots in a plastic bag and ensure that a small amount of soil surrounds the roots to prevent drying out.
  • Seal the bag and label with a sample reference, customer name and date sampled.
  • Samples should be stored in the shade and not exposed to excessive heat.
  • Samples should be shipped as soon as possible. The best results are gained within 3-5 days of sampling.

Biological farming consulting

Improving soil microbiology can seem like a complex process. The truth is its very simple; its the most natural process in the world.

We can help you build a strategy to mimic nature and supplement it where needed so that you can build biological resiliency into your growing system.

The basic tools

We can advise on incorporating various management tools into your current system to reduce impact on biology, start building soil carbon and stimulating microbial diversity.

We focus on the following tools and methods:

  • Composting and nutrient recycling
  • Reduced tillage methods and managing physical structure
  • Livestock incorporation and grazing strategies
  • Diversifying cropping and incorporating cover crops
  • Bio-stimulants, microbial inoculants and compost teas
  • Reducing chemical inputs and selecting less damaging chemicals where needed.
Please contact us directly to discuss your growing needs. Rates are determined on a case by case basis.
